About NEW ENTERPRISE STONE & LIME
NEW ENTERPRISE STONE & LIME supplies aggregates, lime, stone, and concrete products for a variety of applications. The company has dozens of limestone, dolomite, gravel, and sandstone mines; stone and sand quarries; and ready-mix concrete and hot-mix blacktop plants throughout Pennsylvania, western New York, and Delaware. It also performs array of construction services ranging from building bridges and roads to paving residential driveways. Subsidiaries include Buffalo Crushed Stone, Martin Limestone, Valley Quarries, and the Port of Buffalo on eastern Lake Erie.
New Enterprise diversified its offerings with the 2008 purchase of Stabler Companies, a Pennsylvania-based construction materials producer and highway contractor. Stabler's group of companies include Eastern Industries, which operates sand and aggregate quarries in eastern Pennsylvania. The group also suppplies work zone safety equipment such as lighting and solar-powered highway signage on a nationwide basis.
New Enterprise continues to be impacted by the economic downturn, which has contributed to a slowdown in highway and infrastructure projects. As a result, net sales were down slightly in 2010; an increase in the cost of raw materials also affected the company's results.
J. S. Detwiler and his son, Paul, began NEW ENTERPRISE STONE & LIME in 1924. The company remains family-owned and is run by third- and fourth-generation Detwilers.
