Sustainalbe citrus in Calabria, Italy
Following in the footsteps of our Vanilla engagement in Madagascar, we have reached the first milestone in Citrus Sustainability. Based on a cooperation with one of our trusted partners in citrus sourcing and processing, Capua Srl, we have jointly assembled a network consisting of the local Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria (Italy), the farmer consortium Unionberg and more than 300 farmers — with additional 300 farmers keen to join the region-wide program. The initiative is an important step to safeguard the future of citrus, and enables Symrise to offer our customers future-proof scent and taste solutions from trusted partners with full transparency. Our collaboration in Italy is the first step on the road to get all our citrus raw materials fully sustainable.
Madagascar - our sustainable development
For approx. 22 million people on Madagacar agriculture is the main industry and the source of income. Many work at farms harvesting one of the world's most important sweet flavorings: vanilla. 7,000 farmers produce high quality crops for Symrise. To improve life and prospects for Madagascan farming communities, Symrise identified the need for an integrated sustainability approach for farming, and has introduced a series of progressive initiatives in healthcare, education and crop diversification.
