Luminex xMAP® Technology
Luminex's xMAP® Technology combines advanced fluidics, optics, and digital signal processing with proprietary microsphere technology to deliver multiplex assay capabilities. Featuring a flexible, open-architecture design, xMAP® Technology can be configured to perform a wide variety of protein or nucleic acid assays quickly, cost-effectively and accurately.

How xMAP Technology Works

Open-architecture xMAP Technology enables multiplexing of biological tests (assays), reducing time, labor, and costs over traditional methods such as ELISA, western blotting, PCR, and traditional arrays. Systems using xMAP Technology perform discrete assays on the surface of color coded beads known as microspheres, which are then read in a compact analyzer. Using multiple lasers or LEDs and high-speed digital-signal processors, the analyzer reads multiplex assay results by reporting the reactions occurring on each individual microsphere.
Luminex Case Study: University of Louisville Infectious Disease Lab & ARIES®
The University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Laboratory is a CLIA-certified, high-complexity reference laboratory offering testing services for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. The mission of the University of Louisville Infectious Disease Lab is to provide reference laboratory testing that is timely and accurate for the greater Louisville area and southern Indiana community.

Their reputation is built on the relationships they’ve developed with the staff at the hospitals they serve and delivering higher quality results with faster turn-around times. This personal touch allows us to have a greater understanding of their needs and how we can provide new solutions.

They have been working with Luminex for nearly ten years beginning with their first multiplexing system, the Luminex® 200™. Over the years they have adopted additional Luminex systems, with the ARIES® System being the most recent. The flexibility of the ARIES® System has given them the flexibility to create their own laboratory developed tests which reflect the needs of their community and provide hospitals access to esoteric testing not previously available in the region.
Getting Started with xMAP® Technology
Luminex is the leader in multiplexing technology, which is often the best method for testing 3 to 500 targets. Once you’ve decided that multiplexing is the right method for you - it’s easy to get started with xMAP® Technology. First, you need to identify the targets you’re interested in testing.

Once you’ve identified your targets, you can search the xMAP Kit Kinder at the Luminex website to determine if an off the shelf kit from a Luminex partner is available.

Can’t find a kit with your targets? Don’t despair! You have a couple of options to build a custom multiplex assay. You can have a Luminex partner build a custom assay for you. Find a complete list of research partners on the Luminex website.

You can also build your own custom assay. The xMAP Cookbook has 20 proven protocols plus tips and reagent lists.

Still have questions? Search the Luminex Research Publications Database with over 34,000 articles by Luminex customers, collaborators, and partners designed to inspire your next experiment.

Want to talk to a multiplexing expert? Simply contact Luminex support and we’ll help you get started today.
Experience an ARIES® System & SYNCT™ Software Enabled Lab
As patients present with symptoms, physicians need reliable answers to clinical questions. Today's laboratories are being asked to do more with limited budgets and smaller staff, making efficiency and a streamlined workflow more important than ever.

Introducing the ARIES® System: crafted to increase laboratory efficiency, ensure result accuracy, and fit seamlessly into today's lean laboratory workflow. ARIES® assays require less hands-on time and can run both in vitro diagnostic (IVDs) and laboratory developed tests (LDTs).

Based on the physician's orders, the lab can prepare samples for STAT or Batch testing thanks to the independent modules of the ARIES® System. Universal Assay Protocol enables multiple sample types and assays to be run together in a Random Batch.

SYNCT™ Software enables cassettes to be associated with orders from anywhere in the laboratory network. It provides access to results and reports on any networked computer or instrument.
