Just like you...
Are you looking to switch careers into the care sector? Or maybe you’re just starting out in the world or work and feel that care is your calling. Perhaps you’re retired, but still have so much to give. Whatever your situation, we have people just like you, flourishing in our Bluebird Care family.

The global pandemic has changed the world in many ways. Ways that we never thought possible at the beginning of 2020. Apart from lost loved ones, ‘new normals’ and online birthday parties, many of us have lost jobs as a result of suffering and sadly irrecoverable industries. Those industries that have endured the worst being retail and hospitality.

On a positive note, staff in these industries have exceptional and useable customer service skills and many are putting them to good use by working in care with Bluebird Care.

We’ve also seen an increase in the number of retirees come back into work as care assistants with many having a desire to ‘help out’ and do something worthwhile on the frontline.

In fact, we’re experiencing an influx of new types of people from all walks of life, from varying different background and careers make the switch to care.

Just like you, these people started off considering working in care and wondering if it were for them.
Sector Switcher Shannen shares her story.
Shannen was an air-stewardess who made the switch into care during the pandemic.

"I became a care assistant after I was made redundant from Virgin Atlantic where I was a flight attendant.
There are two of us who take care of Rowena. I live with her every other week and always look forward to coming back to see her.
I have noticed over the weeks how much her confidence has grown; she has become more engaged in conversations and likes to try new things. Recently I introduced her to Netflix which she absolutely loves and one of her favourite series is The Crown.
We really enjoy our evenings together, we have a cup of tea and biscuits and a chat on the sofa. She puts the blanket over our knees and likes to hold my hand while we are watching the television, it’s a comfort for her.
Working with Rowena has really been a blessing. I have found it worthwhile and so rewarding to see the difference I have made to someone else’s life."

Silver Carer Derek shares his story...
Derek is in his in 70s and loves his work as a care assistant.

"I was 74 and a grandfather when I decided to become a carer. It was something I thought I’d be good at. I’ve always been caring and I looked after my mum when she had dementia.
As an older carer, I’ve experienced life and my customers can relate to me, I understand the way they’re thinking. I live on my own and the people I care for are friends to me. I look forward to seeing them and they look forward to seeing me. Some of them are younger than I am.
When I tell them I’m 76 they don’t believe it. I think it’s the way I behave. I have a young attitude to life, inside I feel about 50. I’m awake at 6am every morning and can’t bear sitting around. I’d just be bored. I’ve always been on the go. I have plenty of energy and don’t have any aches and pains.
I work up to 40 hours a week, sometimes starting at 7am and finishing at 10pm. And I get as much out of it as the people I look after. "
Difference Maker Harriet shares her story...
"I’ll never forget her face when I walked in with the Christmas tree. Margaret had Alzheimer’s, and even though it was Christmas she didn’t have any decorations. She was over the moon when she saw the tree and helped me to decorate it. ‘Let’s get into the Christmas spirit,’ I said as I put on a Christmas film for her, and that evening I stayed late so we could watch it together.
I absolutely love my job at Bluebird Care. I joined at the age of 18 as a care assistant and it was the best thing I ever did. I had people who needed me and depended on me. It made me realise what I wanted to do in life, I wanted to help people.
Now, in my twenties, I am Head of Recruitment and Marketing for the Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire franchises. And if I can get to where I am today then anyone can. I never thought I’d be in this position when I was younger. I’m happily married with two children, I’m buying my first house and have a job I adore.
I get to give people their dream jobs and support them along their way. I’m very passionate about taking on the right people and I have high standards. They have to be caring.
Finding people who are right for the job is fantastic, watching them start their journey and grow with us. That excites me. I’m motivated to do the best I possibly can.
I’m not saying that being a carer is easy. There are days when it can be difficult and tiring. But you have a job that has meaning, a job that is needed and a job that is so rewarding.
Caring is about making a difference to people and having fun while you do it."

Healthcare Exchanger Chris shares her story...
Chris used to work in a residential care home before exchanging that for Bluebird Care. We listen to her story here.

"I was a publican for 30 years until I decided to retire at the age of 60. Within months I knew I wasn’t ready for retirement and I joined Bluebird Care as a care assistant. Little did I know how rewarding it was going to be. Now, at the age of 70, I’m still here.
Bluebird Care is a family and I’m very lucky. They treat you well and there’s support at all times. They have given me the opportunity to further my new career. I have been given training and taken courses, and I’m always happy to learn.
I work around 24 hours a week. No day is the same, and over the years I have met some lovely people.
Because I’m older I think some of the customers are more relaxed with me. They like the fact that I’m nearer their age and we can reminisce. We remember a lot of the same things. I also care for people younger than me, I’m able to get on with all ages.
Every person teaches me something. This job reminds me every day that life is so special. Everyone is important. My mum always taught me that and she was right. My only regret is that I did not follow this line of work earlier in my life."
