Job search tips you haven't tried
Job hunting is unique to every individual who embarks on the journey, yet often the advice given can be quite general and relatively uninspiring. Many people who succeed in achieving greatness, or in acquiring their dream job role, have thought outside the box and embarked on a varied journey of job searching, remaining open to the many options available.

There is so much advice, both online and dished out by various companies, that it can become overwhelming. We’ll help you fine-tune your job search process to make is as quick, painless and seamless as possible by providing you with a few tips that you may not yet have tried.

Focus on your CV

First things first: Simplify your resume. Many applicants don’t realise that their application and CV will often first be read by a computer, through an applicant tracking system, before it reaches the hands of a real person. It will then pass onto to a member of the HR team or a recruiter. You need to make yourself appeal to both them and the individuals who will eventually offer you the job. Mirror the words and phrases used in the job description in your resume as well as including any job and industry specific keywords. The computer will organise the resumes based on the prevalence of keywords it finds and so you want to make sure that yours is at the top.

Reach out

It’s vital to remember that online applications shouldn’t be your only approach. Once you have applied online, or even before you have applied, find the people behind the job role, approach an internal recruiter to ask questions and get on the radar of the people who might be able to influence you getting an interview. Simply relying on the digital process isn’t going to set you apart from the other applicants.

People are your most essential resource when it comes to the job search so use your network wisely. People are ultimately more useful than machines because you can engage with them and appeal to their individuality, rather than having to fit in with an algorithm or a piece of scanning software. Don’t be afraid to tell friends, old colleagues and family member that you are looking for work as, more often than not, people will want to help you out. They will be able to recommend you personally for potential roles as they will then be aware what you are looking for. Face-to-face, or on the phone, networking is much more profitable to your job search than sitting behind your computer day after day.

Be bold

Approach the professionals in the companies you want to work for and ask them for advice. This can provide you with an ‘in’ to a company or simply with invaluable advice you can use in your job search. You may even create a position for yourself just by impressing the people you are speaking to. Don’t wait for your resume to reach the right people; be proactive and make sure it gets to them.

Use the internet wisely

Social media is another job searching tool that shouldn’t be overlooked. LinkedIn is the first place that recruiters and companies will look for potential candidates. Indeed, more than 90% of recruiters are said to use LinkedIn as their primary search tool. So, don’t disregard it - make sure your profile is up to date and in line with your resume. But don’t be afraid to change your profile as and when it suits the job you are applying for. Twitter and Facebook can also be useful platforms to engage with as you can find out about job roles before they are published on company websites or recruitment pages.

Be yourself

Above all else in your job search, try and be a person, rather than a digital piece of paper. It is all too easy in the job-hunting process to hide behind the data that a recruiter can find online. But you will not be remembered. Pick up the phone, write personalised thank you emails and make the connection with the individuals who you might go on to work with. Saying thank you after an interview demonstrates that you are a real person, with a real, vested interest in working at the company. People are far more likely to hire someone they have been personally recommended so, even if you came in through an unknown application, make sure the company cannot forget you.
