About NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) offers employees a work environment that is second to none. Our many dedicated staff report to work each day in some of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the country. From the sheer tranquility of Montauk Point on Long Island's easternmost tip to the awe inspiring majesty of Niagara Falls on our State's western border with Canada, there are over 200 State parks and historic sites that operate to meet the recreational needs of the millions of visitors we receive each year.

State parks and historic sites are staffed by a core of permanent employees who work year round to maintain these precious resources. During the peak of our operating season (May through September) the permanent staff is supplemented by several thousand seasonal employees who work to ensure that our patrons have a positive and safe experience when visiting our sites. Lifeguards, who oversee our beaches and pools, and Park and Recreation Aides, who perform a variety of tasks in our parks, are two examples of positions staffed by seasonal employees.

National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Historic Site
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor expansion is complete! The facility is re-opening to the public following a one year construction project. The expanded Hall includes improved visitor access and new exhibits with interactive displays, and artifacts that highlight the experiences of Purple Heart recipients. During the dedication of the new wing, @ltgovhochulny unveiled a plaque to honor the memory of the late NY State Senator William J. Larkin, Jr., who served more than 23 years in the United States Army and was instrumental in establishing the Hall of Honor in 2006.
Black History Month at NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting both destinations within the state park and historic site system and several historically significant sites in New York communities that preserve and champion these vital stories. Learn more about the trailblazers, military heroes, civil rights activists, musicians, writers, and events that have impacted the state's and the nation's cultural landscape.
Transgender Remembrance Day at Marsha P. Johnson State Park
In honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance and Transgender Awareness Week, NY State Parks celebrates Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman and an early leader in the LGBTQ+ movement. From the Stonewall uprising to the AIDS epidemic, Marsha "Pay It No Mind," Johnson championed civil rights for all members of the LGBTQ+ community throughout the rest of her life. Marsha's story ended tragically on July 6th, 1992, at the young age of 46, and the cause of her death still remains unsolved. Marsha P. Johnson's courage, kindness, leadership, and call to action at the first pride march in 1970: "[one person] never completely has their rights... until all have their rights." will never be forgotten. Earlier this year, East River State Park in Brooklyn was officially renamed Marsha P. Johnson State Park.
