Grotto of the Redemption
About Grotto of the Redemption
The magnificent structure of the Grotto covers more than one city block and includes hand-carved Italian statues, petrified wood, quartz crystals and semi-precious stones from around the world. The Grotto is a composite of nine separate grottos portraying scenes from the life of Christ.
Since construction began in 1912, the Grotto has drawn thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the unique beauty and peace of this spectacular treasure.
The Grotto is open year round and guided tours are offered daily May through mid-October. On the grounds are a gift shop, museum, café, campground, playground and pond with trumpeter swans and ducks.
In West Bend, Iowa, lies the largest grotto in the world. It depicts Jesus in various scenes during his life. Construction was begun by Father Paul Dobberstein in order to give thanks for a recovery from an illness.
