About Us
Building on Success

Formed in the early 1990s, a group of concrete construction professionals had grown weary of the constant travel their jobs required. Being away for extended periods of time put strain on their families, friends and quality of life. Seeking to make a change and identifying an opportunity to disrupt the concrete construction industry, Lithko was founded. Focusing on a local close-to-home strategy, Lithko created an unparalleled concrete construction company, offering careers in construction with unique work-life balance.

To support growth without the excessive travel, we targeted our work to middle-market projects and focused on opening additional locations. We named these semi-autonomous branches, BURGS (Business Unit Running Great). Aggressively recruiting from the industry and universities, we hire professionals with the drive to become leaders. Once on board, we focus on their development, offering them unique opportunities for career growth.

In the early 2000s, we expanded our leadership team and further developed the business model. Today, Lithko operates more than 19 BURGS within the US, with plans to open many more.
Culture
We are a team of self-motivated individuals that are passionate about building concrete structures. Ours is a non-hierarchical environment where everyone is hands-on and understands their role on the team.

Although we have processes in place to complete our projects, we pride ourselves on allowing flexibility and creativity in how we complete those projects. Having this flexibility provides individuals the opportunity to own their work, creating a culture of accountability.

We engage our coworkers because we value them and respect their input. We also expect our coworkers to come to work prepared to engage and provide their full effort.

Safety
At Lithko, safety is our priority and is integrated into our project planning and execution processes. Working safely is a mindset we cultivate with our culture of engagement and accountability. We accomplish this by making safety fundamental to everything we do, from our initial bid all the way to our morning project meetings.

We believe people are Lithko’s most valuable asset, so we plan and execute our work to ensure our coworkers’ safety.

We leverage safety training as a way to engage our coworkers in quality discussions on how to execute our work safely. We invest time and effort to make safety trainings based upon real life examples, including details that resonate with the people performing the hard work in the field.

One example of how we demonstrate this is through our Operational Activity Trainings (OATs). Most companies use standard toolbox talks to meet jobsite safety requirements. At Lithko, we use specific trainings on-site to help leaders discuss real hazards that pertain to the work they are doing today.
Project Showcase
Charlotte beat Dallas to become the new home for Lowe’s global technology center. Construction on the 23-story building will include an office, parking garage, and some retail. Our scope involves slab on metal deck, the cast in place parking garage, slab on grade, and foundations on the adjacent precast garage.

The foundations are demanding mass concrete placements due to their large dimensions. The center pile cap is 50 feet wide x 90 feet long x 7 feet thick. There are 150 auger cast, deep foundation piles, requiring our team to dig and place rebar around all of this. We successfully completed this portion of the project in 3 weeks (1,300 cubic yards, 225 yards/hour with 2 pumps).

Our next challenge is the main core, which will start below the first-floor elevation, 15 feet in the ground. The first level of core is comprised of 35-feet tall walls, including some shear, that will range from 18” to 2’ thick. We are utilizing self-consolidating concrete due to the rebar congestion.

Once we start on the garage, although our work will be typical, we will have a very aggressive schedule. Each level is 23,000 square feet and our plan is to breakdown each floor into 3 placements (7KSF-10KSF). To meet the schedule, we will need to pour every 4th day while accommodating the city’s noise ordinance (no work before 7 am or after 9 pm) in this highly congested traffic area.

Lastly, our cast in place structure will go up to level 9. However, structural steel will begin on level 7. This will require our team to stop work for 2 weeks and then come back to install the rebar, close formwork, and pour concrete around the steel.

To ensure we are keeping up with all the details and avoiding any snags in coordination and schedule, we are enhancing our daily planning process. After our main huddle with the entire team at the trailer, our Field Leads are taking their crew to the specific work areas to plan in more detail for the day.
