In 2006, Heidi Jannenga, a leading sports physical therapist and clinic director, was looking for ways to improve her clinic's bottom line. After identifying dictation and paper documentation management as two of her practice's biggest expenses, she started looking for a more cost-effective and intuitive solution. As it turned out, there wasn’t anything PT-specific or web-based that fit her clinic’s needs. So, she enlisted the help of a technologist to assist her in building their own solution.
After completing market research, however, Heidi realized that her clinic’s problems weren’t unique. She discovered that 80% of physical therapists were using pen and paper for documentation—something that not only hindered therapists’ ability to efficiently treat their patients and run their practices, but also compromised the quality, security, and completeness of patient records. Realizing just how pervasive this problem was, Heidi knew she needed to build a solution for the industry at large.
When Heidi and her technology co-founder launched WebPT in 2008, she introduced technology that completely disrupted her own profession. Today, holding 40% market share, serving more than 140,000 rehab therapists across 16,000 clinics nationwide, WebPT is the fastest-growing outpatient rehab therapy software in the country. This mission-critical piece of software has not only enabled physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists to have a more efficient and improved way of documenting, but also elevated the tech IQ of the profession. Today, 85% of physical therapists use EMRs instead of pen and paper.
As co-founder and Chief Clinical Officer, Heidi focuses on advising the company’s strategic direction, product innovation, and workplace culture, while advocating for the physical therapy profession on a national scale. Under Heidi’s leadership, WebPT has continued to innovate its product suite in alignment with the evolving needs of rehab therapists. In addition to offering a defensible, compliant, and intuitive documentation solution, WebPT has launched 13 products, each of which play an integral role in providing thousands of rehab therapists with comprehensive, compliant, and scalable solutions required to achieve clinical and financial success. By providing the rehab therapy community with more efficient systems to run their practices, WebPT has also helped improve communication across the continuum of care, which has had a tremendous impact on countless patient outcomes.
Despite its remarkable growth, WebPT remains to its people-first approach to business, prioritizing its core values, nurturing its tight-knit culture, and placing Members’ needs above the company’s. Similarly, WebPT invites its Members to take a seat at the decision-making table. Within the WebPT application, therapists are enabled (and encouraged) to submit their product suggestions. They can also vote on the priority of system updates, as well as new features and products. These suggestions have helped the company keep a pulse on therapists’ shifting needs, motivations, and challenges over the years, thus enabling the company to innovate with purpose. In fact, some of the company’s most meaningful application improvements have come directly from Member suggestions.
