About Canadian Utility Construction
Canadian Utility Construction Corporation (CUC) provides quality underground construction services to utility companies throughout Western Canada. CUC specializes in a full range of construction and maintenance services for the Natural Gas Distribution and Transmission industry. Its complete range of underground construction services includes natural gas distribution and transmission, stations and facilities, underground electrical and telecommunications. The company started in 1991, when Noel T. Coon, Mike Kemper, and Lorne Kramer became partners and founded Khowutzun Pipeline on Vancouver Island in a joint venture with the Khowutzun Band. In 1996, the joint venture with the Khowutzun Band ended and the company was renamed Canadian Utility Construction.
Since its early beginnings, CUC’s primary focus has always been to provide the safest, best quality service for their customers, and to build and maintain strong customer relationships through service excellence.
In 1991, CUC landed their first long-term contract in Vancouver Island, British Columbia with Centra Gas (now FortisBC). CUC continues to provide services to FortisBC today and has since expanded nation-wide to provide services to a number of utilities throughout the country, including PNG, Atco, AltaGas, Enmax, Telus, Manitoba Hydro, and Sask Energy.
In January 2015, CUC continued to expand, both their service offerings and as a company, by becoming a Quanta Services company. Quanta is an integrated, international network of respected companies that construct transmission and distribution facilities for the electrical, petroleum, natural gas and telecom industries.
Through tremendous growth and change over the first 25 years of operation, CUC continues to provide incredible stability and continuity to their employees and customers. The company credits its growth and success to its dedicated employees who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the company’s core values.
CUC’s latest chapter proves to be exciting times as they look forward to taking on newer, larger, and more complex projects utilizing the specialized resources of their Quanta sister companies.

To set ourselves apart from other contractors we have teamed up with TrueU, which is an intensive in-person classroom and experiential learning program, that helps develop the fundamental skills and abilities that every leader needs. So that our foreman have all the proper skills and certifications to be strategically driven and to be a role model for the crew. As well as, having Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to help with peer engagement. They are people with enough experience and specialization in a particular field or skill, to help train others to gain experience and confidence, to complete such specific tasks. With the partnership with TrueU and the implementation of Subject Matter Experts, we aim to reduce the number of injuries and incidents through these training programs.
Training Tomorrow’s LeadersAs part of CUC’s commitment to safety, the Quality and Safety team have initiated various types of training and development programs. These programs help create leaders in performance and safety and delivers exceptional value to our employees and to our customers. With providing our employees with the sufficient amount of training and development, we aim to be able to accomplish our ultimate goal of zero unsafe acts in and around the work place.
