Our merchandisers have a unique opportunity within our company. They work with leading retailers. They get in-depth knowledge of our products and the importance of product positioning within stores. They have a part-time, flexible schedule.

Several merchandisers, though, take that part-time work and convert it into a long-time career opportunity at ScottsMiracle-Gro. Now a regional sales director with 23 “seasons” at the company, our associate Brendan knows firsthand what the combination of a merchandiser role and hard work can become.

As a senior in high school in 1999, Brendan had the dream job:
1. Working outside.
2. Great hours.
3. Making just about double what his friends were making at the time and the prospect of eventually turning the job into a bigger role.

In addition to those dream aspects of the job, he was learning so many valuable lessons and skills along the way.

He learned what it meant to have a strong work ethic. From understanding how to manage people to interacting with associates in a business setting, Brendan quickly developed a variety of people skills. He quickly expanded his sales acumen, which would help immensely in the near future.

Fast forward to a few years later, Brendan was looking for a full-time role. With his great experience as a merchandiser, the foundation was set. He was hired as a sales manager. He continued to use and evolve the sales tools he learned while he was still in school. Brendan now leads a region of district managers in the northeast who lead sales managers who are mentoring today’s group of merchandisers.

Brendan is just one example of an associate who’s taken full advantage of the merchandiser opportunity. There are many more stories like his. The merchandiser role has proven to be a great place to start and potentially develop a dream career along the way.
