About Advocate Medical Group
Advocating wellness in Chicagoland from Palos Heights to Palatine, Advocate Health Care is a not-for-profit, integrated health care network with more than 250 care sites serving the Chicago and surrounding areas. Advocate's operations include about a dozen acute and specialty care hospitals (including Christ Medical Center, Hope Children's Hospital,  Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, and Lutheran General Hospital) with more than 3,400 beds, as well as community health clinics and home health care and hospice services. The health system includes the largest physician network of primary care physicians, specialists, and sub-specialists in the state.

Operations

Along with providing the full spectrum of health care services, Advocate Health has a clinical laboratory joint venture, ACL Laboratories, with Aurora Health Care. ACL provides analytical and diagnostic testing services for both companies' facilities.

With more than 30,000 associates the company is one of the largest employers in the Chicago area. Its staff includes 6,000 affiliated physicians and more than 9,000 nurses.

The system has teaching affiliations with area medical schools such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Strategy

In a major expansion, Advocate Health acquired central Illinois health network BroMenn Healthcare System in 2010. BroMenn Healthcare System, which had some 2,000 employees and had been in business for more than 110 years, became part of the Advocate system and its facilities were renamed Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Advocate Eureka Hospital. The deal, which also included a network of nearly 400 area health care providers, expanded Advocate's reach beyond the Chicago area, giving the health system a statewide presence.

In 2012 Advocate Health completed a $53 million addition to the newly acquired Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Illinois, to replace the hospital's mother-baby and neonatal care units. The unit  provides 30 private rooms and a level 2 special care nursery. When it comes to women's care, Advocate Health already has roughly 10 specialty mammography centers located throughout the area.

The company has grown through a series of acquisitions including, of course, the BroMenn buy; other purchases have included the 280-bed Condell Medical Center and the Midwest Physician Group (now part of the Advocate Medical Group division). In late 2012 it also announced plans to buy Sherman Health Systems.
