Historically, our employees have had the traditional benefit offerings of PPO and HMO plans, along with dental and vision. In 2017, we added a high deductible health plan with significantly lower premiums to our offerings. In addition this plan provided an opportunity for employees to open a health savings account to which the company provides a contribution.
In addition to our medical, dental, vision and employee assistance benefit offerings, we are excited to continue to empower our employees and their family members to become better health care consumers and improve their health and well-being by implementing new programs, tools, and features:
- Wellness Program – Designed to create a culture that encourages employees to become more engaged in healthy lifestyle behaviors.
- MedSavvy – Prescription medication transparency tool aimed at helping individuals identify the right medication by evaluating its safety, effectiveness, and cost.
- Telehealth – Video and/or phone option giving employees and their family members convenient, cost effective access to physicians, and nurse practitioners for primary care services.
- Enhanced Communications – Mobile communication tool providing employees access to educational benefit information 24/7.
As our Wellness Program evolves over the next few years, we plan to offer other programs such as biometric screenings and health risk assessments, tobacco cessation program, health coaching, nutrition counseling, walking/fitness activities and challenges, and a weight loss/management program.
We believe that our employees’ well-being is an essential component of our mission and continued success as a company. We will continue to deploy holistic health care strategies that consider the “whole person,” are affordable and employ tactics that continuously engage our employees while providing them with the tools and resources they need to make informed health decisions and be wise health care consumers.

Sustainability
Less Waste. More Resources. Cleaner Air.
As one of North America’s largest recyclers of metal and a manufacturer of steel from 100% recycled metal, we work every day to help ensure a future with less waste, more natural resources, and cleaner air. We turn the old into new, enable the obsolete to become reusable, and, in the process, build better communities.
Sustainability is one of Schnitzer Steel’s three core values. Our sustainability strategy is focused on empowering our employees to make a meaningful difference through their daily work. By applying our Sustainability Principles, our employees, individually and collectively, help us achieve our ambitious and long-term sustainability goals.

Diversity and Inclusion
At Schnitzer Steel, diversity and inclusion is much more than representation, it is about how all of our employees can be their “true selves” in the workplace. For us this means we embrace differences of all kinds. For example, differences of thought, style, beliefs, backgrounds, education and social economic status just to name a few. We want to have the type of culture which thrives on differences - a proven path to accelerate innovation and growth. We believe having a diverse and inclusive culture is a critical element of our strategy and long-term success as an organization, and we have identified the following objectives to help us on our journey.
- Position Schnitzer Steel as an employer of choice
- Position Schnitzer Steel as the industry leader in diversity and inclusion

Schnitzer Steel has a long legacy of charitable giving, volunteerism, and support in the communities where we operate. Our tradition of generosity and community service lives on through the passion and commitment of our employees.
One of our commitments to our communities is through our partnership with the various food banks within our areas of operation. We have a number of food bank drives throughout the year and support our local food banks through volunteer efforts. Our Pick-n-Pull Stores held a 2018 Summer Foodbank FUND Drive and collected over $100,000 in donations.
In 2017 a number of areas in the United States and Puerto Rico experienced an unprecedented level of natural disasters which severely impacted our employees, their families, and others in those communities. As a company, Schnitzer pulled together quickly to help those in need. Schnitzer Steel initiated a campaign to fund disaster relief support which raised $34,050.00 in contributions to the American Red Cross.
In October 2017, we expanded our support by establishing an Employee Disaster Relief Fund under our flagship charitable foundation, Recycling For A Better Tomorrow. This program provides emergency financial assistance for our employees who have experienced hardship due to a natural disaster. The assistance can be used for essential living expenses, home repair, transportation, or child care. In the first few months of the program, the foundation has already provided financial support to ten of our employees and their families.
