Mortenson Safety WeekSafety is a bond that unites us. It’s our connection to each other, and to something bigger than ourselves. Being connected gives us strength, because it means we are not alone in building a stronger, safer industry, and in creating a safe, supportive environment for our workers. Supported means we are here for one another, and we have each other’s backs in every possible way, providing the tools and resources necessary to ensure everyone can do their best work and return home safely every day. When we’re connected and supported, we are better able to help ourselves and our teams stay present and focused on the job. We are better able to create a culture and workplace where everyone feels safe. The more we stay connected and committed, the more we can show up fully to support one another. And the more we feel supported, the more safe choices we make, and the better work we deliver, leading to safer selves, safer teams and safer job sites.
Alamo 6 Solar Mortenson was selected as EPC contractor to build five utility-scale solar projects over a three-year period in the San Antonio, Texas area. These projects total over 448 MWdc and are expected to generate enough electricity to power 73,000 homes.
One of these projects, Alamo 6 Solar, located in Pecos County, Texas, is one of the largest of its kind in the world at 140 MWdc. The project utilizes a dual-axis tracker system and crystalline modules. Each tracker contains 42 modules, totaling nearly 430,800 modules for the entire site.
The unique aspects of building dual access systems presented challenges in which equipment and methods to use for this site. At the time all these concepts were breaking new ground for solar.

Mortenson completed two sister projects in South Carolina, totaling 105 MW — the 93 MWdc Jasper Solar project and 12 MWdc Ridgeland Solar project. Combined, the projects span almost 900 acres in Ridgeland, South Carolina and contain over 300,000 modules.
Due to the location of these projects in a hurricane zone, it was necessary to allow for high-speed wind tolerances when installing the foundations. Build sequencing was also extremely important to account for the varying voltage sizes of the array and special consideration was made to the installation of medium voltage cable to accommodate wetland areas located on site.

Mortenson was selected by MidAmerican Energy Company (MidAmerican) to construct the Diamond Trail Wind Project in Iowa. The scope of work includes public road improvements, access roads, foundations, collection system installation, wiring and erection of 19 - Vestas V110 turbines, 25 - GE 2.8 turbines and 34-Vestas V136 turbines, T-Line, substation, O&M building and met towers.
Diamond Trail is part of MidAmerican’s Wind XII project, which will make the company the first investor-owned U.S. utility to offset 100 percent of its customers’ electricity usage with renewable energy. Along with Diamond Trail, we won three other projects in the Wind XII wind energy portfolio. Upon completion of Wind XII, we will have installed 19 projects for MidAmerican, or 3,781.5 MW for this customer since 2005 and 5,075 MW total in Iowa.
