The birthplace of civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., Atlanta is run by a mayor and a 16-member council. Presided over by a president, the council adopts ordinances to establish city policy, laws, and resolutions. The city government also includes more than a dozen departments and numerous commissions and boards. With a metropolitan population of more than 5 million, Atlanta is the most populous city in Georgia.
