About Thomasville Furniture
Thomasville Furniture Industries, a leading furniture maker, would like you to create your own Key West paradise by taking home its Ernest Hemingway collection. Its wooden and upholstered wares are sold in more than 90 independently-owned Thomasville Home Furnishings stores, and some 400 independent retail stores. It owns more than 40 of its namesake stores. In addition to Ernest Hemingway, the company boasts such brands as Darryl Carter, Humphrey Bogart, The Collection of a Lifetime, and Hills of Tuscany. It also operates Creative Interiors, a manufacturing unit that makes RTA furniture sold to Target and Wal-Mart. The firm is a subsidiary of Furniture Brands.
Pointing to the deep recession, stalled housing market, and rise in the number of foreclosures, parent Furniture Brands saw its 2010 sales drop by more than 5% vs. 2009. In response, Thomasville and sister company Drexel Heritage have expanded their networks of company- and dealer-owned branded stores. To this end, Thomasville logged a 27% increase in sales at its company-owned stores while sales among Furniture Brands' other retail stores declined.
Thomasville has been fine-tuning its manufacturing and sourcing operations in recent years and ramping up its brand awareness through parent Furniture Brands' focus on developing single-brand retail stores. The newer Thomasville-specific stores are primarily dealer-owned. To this end, Furniture Brands and Thomasville have refocused their distribution efforts, with Thomasville looking to expand its network of branded stores, both company- and dealer-owned. The company also sold its office furniture unit, Hickory Business Furniture (HBF), to focus more on its residential furniture operations. HNI Corporation, a leading maker of office furniture, purchased HBF for about $75 million in 2008.
To freshen its brands as well, Thomasville inked a deal with interior designer Darryl Carter to roll out a namesake collection under the Thomasville banner. The designer's collection, coined "new traditional," includes pedestal side tables, high-back chairs, china chests, and table lamps.
