About The Blood Bank Of Hawaii
BBH was started February 1941 with funds provided by the Public Health Committee of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce. Known then as Honolulu Blood Plasma Bank, the facility was located on the grounds of The Queen's Hospital.
With the outbreak of WWII, Honolulu Blood Plasma Bank served as a wartime agency under the Office of Civilian Defense returning to its non-profit civilian status on October 26, 1943. Honolulu Blood Plasma Bank officially changed its name to Blood Bank of Hawaii in 1946. Dr. Forest J. Pinkerton served as its director until his passing in 1974.
BBH is federally licensed and inspected by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We are a community organization. In addition to our primary function of collecting, processing and distributing blood for patient transfusion, our facility and staff also serve as a center for consultation regarding the testing and use of blood and its components. Our resources and services are available to all patients and physicians throughout the State of Hawaii.
