Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has locked up a big share of the private prison market. The company operates more than 65 correctional, detention, and juvenile facilities with a capacity of some 91,000 beds in about 20 states (including Washington, DC). CCA contracts with federal, state, and local authorities to manage the facilities, about 45 of which are company-owned. CCA also owns two facilities that are managed by other companies. Federal correctional and detention authorities account for more than 40% of CCA's sales. The company also provides rehabilitation, education programs, health care, food services, recreational programs, and religious services for inmates of its facilities.
In addition to keeping inmates where they're supposed to be, CCA provides transportation of prisoners through its TRANSCOR AMERICA unit. TransCor operates throughout the US and serves more than 800 federal, state, and local agencies. This business generates about $4 million per year, representing less than 1% of CCA's revenues.
The company is responsible for the design, construction, and expansion of its prisons, jails and detention facilities; it also oversees the management of operations, including general administration, staff hiring, facility maintenance, and supervision of prison inmates. It runs facilities branded as minimum security with open housing; medium security with cells or dormitories and a secure perimeter; and maximum security with cells, secure perimeter, and external patrol. Correctional facilities, as a rule, house adult prisoners serving more than a year's time, whereas detention facilities house prisoners on a shorter-term basis, such as inmates being detained by ICE or who are facing trial on charges carrying sentences of one year or less.
Though crime may not pay, operating crime facilities does, and CCA is expanding its operations. It is building a more than 1,000-bed correctional facility in Millen Georgia, which will open in 2012. The company was awarded a contract by the Office of Federal Detention Trustee to design, build, and operate a new correctional facility in Pahrump, Nevada, with over 1,000 beds; construction was completed in late 2010. As needed, CCA expands its existing facilities, as well.
In 2009 the company named Damon T. Hininger (its former president and COO) as its new CEO.
