SUPERAMERICA, or “SA”, has a long & rich local and national history which began in 1960 with its first location, at 7th street and Wall in downtown St. Paul Minnesota. Elmer Erickson purchased the location as an outlet for the products of the Northwestern Refining refinery located in St. Paul Park, Minnesota.
In 1970, Ashland Oil, Inc. acquired 81 of the “SA” units when it purchased Northwestern Refining. The company continued growth in the Minnesota market and expanded to states across the country.
1977 marked the start of the widely known and respected SuperMom’s® brand. The commissary and bakery operation services the Twin Cities area from its St. Paul Park location which opened in 1987.
In 1982, the SUPERAMERICA logo as it’s known today was introduced and continues to be an iconic symbol in its marketing area.
In 1998 the merger of SUPERAMERICA and Emro Marketing Co, the retail marketing subsidiary of Marathon Oil was completed forming the 2nd largest company-owned and operated convenience store in the U.S. Speedway SuperAmerica LLC continued its existence until 2010.
2010 marked the purchase of the SUPERAMERICA name, where Northern Tier Energy, forming Northern Tier Retail, Northern Tier Bakery and St. Paul Park Refining (S.P.P.R.) acquired SUPERAMERICA stores, SuperMom’s® Bakery and the St. Paul Park Refinery, returning the brand back home to Minnesota.
June of 2016 marks the most recent transaction of the brand, with the completion of a transaction with Western Refining.
