CP has set ambitious science-based targets to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We are proud to be taking a leadership role in the freight industry’s low-carbon transition and of the progress we have made to date. CP has continued to reduce GHG emissions through fuel efficiency measures, achieving a 44 percent improvement in locomotive fleet fuel efficiency since 1990. The installation of a solar energy farm at our Calgary headquarters allows us to generate up to five megawatts of renewable electricity and avoid approximately 2,600 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
Through our Hydrogen Locomotive Program, we are retrofitting diesel-powered locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology to deploy North America’s first hydrogen-powered line-haul freight locomotive prototype. As we progress our Climate Strategy, we will continue to focus on fuel efficiency efforts in the near term to support the advancement of alternative fuels and emerging technologies for the future.
