Geographic Reach

Outside the US, Knowledge Universe Education's parent company operates childcare centers in the UK and India, as well as preschools in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. In education-obsessed Singapore, Knowledge Universe Pte. serves more than 6,000 students through its early childhood education, enrichment, and higher education programs.

Strategy

Already the largest provider of early childhood education and care in the nation, the company is still on the lookout for acquisition opportunities. It seeks to buy companies that make at least $1 million a year, have the capacity to enroll a minimum of120 students, and are on an owned or leased property of an acre or more. (It had just such a target in mind when it made an unsolicited bid to buy for-profit school operator and rival Nobel Learning Communities, but lowered its offer from some $186 million to just over $140 million the following year. Nobel's board rejected the offer, saying it was too low.)

Knowledge Universe rebranded its KLC School Partnerships division as Champions in a move designed to enhance the image of the program. The Champions division, which serves mostly high school students, has three product lines: Champions Academy for math and reading skills; Champions Science Adventures for science skills; and Champions Extended Learning for after-school studies. Champions has more than 650 sites in 20 states.
