About Tube City IMS
One man's trash is another man's treasure, and Tube City IMS sees a bounty in scrap steel. The TMS International company provides outsourced raw material procurement and post-production services that help steel mills profit from scrap. A major scrap metal broker, Tube City buys about 9 million tons of scrap annually from U.S. Steel, Baosteel, AK Steel, ArcelorMittal, and Tata Steel. It also offers pre-production material handling, scrap management, and scrap preparation services. Tube City's post-production services include material and product handling, metal recovery, and logistics. It also processes steel by-products and conditions the surface of stainless steel.
Operations
Tube City IMS operates in two divisions -- Mill Services and Raw Material and Optimization. The Mill Services group receives, inspects, sorts, cleans, shears, burns, shreds and bales ferrous scrap and scrap substitutes, such as pig iron. It recycles and processes the by-product known as slag to separate the metallic and non-metallic properties to sell for other uses, such as making construction aggregates. The company is also a pioneer of steel surface conditioning -- sanding and glossing the surface for use in automobiles and stainless steel appliances. Finally, Tube City IMS transports the semi-finished and finished steel products using its own fleet of cranes, locomotives, and off-highway trucks to and from steel mills.
The Raw Material and Optimization group secures scrap metal from five continents, including Asia (China), the world's top steel producer. This division is not dependent on the price of steel, but the production volume of its customers. The company uses two proprietary software suites, Scrap OptiMiser and GenBlend, to assist mills in sourcing, buying and managing scrap inventory.
Geographic Reach
The company's global network includes 82 on-site locations in 11 countries and 29 brokerage offices in 15 countries. The Mill Services division operates in the US, Europe, and Latin America. In Europe, it has sites at 11 mills in Belgium, France, Serbia, Slovakia and the UK, and in Latin America it operates in Mexico (at Ternium Mexico) and Trinidad and Tobago. Tube City IMS also has operations in Africa and Asia.
Strategy
Tube City IMS works closely with its customers, offering a range of projects from specialized services at a single site to large, dedicated operations with a full array of steel production support services. The company relies on long-term relationships with its partners to sustain its business growth. A large percentage of its work is repeat business from loyal partners.
