About Associated Grocers of the South, Inc.
Associated Grocers (AG) is a wholesale grocery distribution company that supplies 175 independently owned retail grocery stores located in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee and the panhandle of Florida. AG was incorporated in 1928 and is located in Birmingham, AL. We have 275 employees including more than half who are members of the Retail Wholesale Department Store Union (RWDSU).
We receive and ship both dry and refrigerated grocery products from two warehouses covering 483,000 square feet. We receive product during our first shift starting at 5:00 a.m. daily and begin our second shift shipping operation at 4:00 p.m. every afternoon. We carry a full line of refrigerated products including meat, produce, dairy, milk, frozen food and ice cream.
The wholesale grocery industry has proven to be an extremely resilient business due to the fact that regardless of whatever bad happens in our world - people always have to eat! Whereas the recent Covid pandemic caused many businesses to shut down temporarily and some even permanently, our business thrived. Our employees never missed a day of work because our sales increased rapidly. While other people were struggling financially, our employees were able to significantly increase their earnings. This historical trend has happened for many years as our business remained strong during inflation, recession, 9/11 attack and Gulf War, to name just a few.
We pride ourselves in providing our employees with competitive pay, annual merit increases and excellent benefits. We offer our employees Blue Cross health and dental insurance at much lower rates than most other employers because we understand the financial importance of having reliable insurance to protect our employee and their families. We also provide our employees with life insurance and many other benefits.
If you are looking for a great place to work - where work is always available - we invite you to apply for any of our jobs that best match your respective skills and experience. We look forward to meeting and having you join our team!

AG Order Selectors are Industrial Athletes who start at $18 per hour. When they achieve 85% production with minimal errors, they advance to $19 per hour. After achieving 100% production, they earn $20 per hour. New employees with prior similar experience routinely progress to top pay in only a few weeks. In 2021, some selectors earned more than $80,000 each!
Selectors earn Production Bonuses in three ways - (1) Weekly Bonus for achieving above 100% production, (2) Nightly Bonus for being one of the top 5 selectors above 100% in each warehouse area and,(3) Quality Bonus of $25 per week for not having any mispicks or case shortages.
Selectors pick approximately 1,500 cases per night using Voice Activated Headsets that direct them to warehouse pick slots. Selectors use double length electric pallet jacks in our grocery area and single length jacks in our refrigerated warehouse, because aisles are more narrow.
Selectors are given a specific amount of time to select each order based on the number of pick slots they must pick from, the number of cases picked,, case weights, jack speed, and the overall travel time to complete their order and drive it to the loading dock. This method of "working against the clock" is much more fair than other warehouses that require selectors to achieve a required number of 'cases per hour' that does not properly account for total distance traveled, number of slots picked from and equipment speed.
