AN OVERVIEW OF WHO WE ARE
As a global leader in sustainable technologies, we apply our cutting-edge science to create solutions with our
customers that make a real difference to the world around us.
We focus our efforts on three big global challenges: helping to make the world's air cleaner, to keep its people
healthy and to use its natural resources more efficiently. We've already made great strides in tackling these
issues, and every year our solutions help relieve symptoms in millions of ill people, stop more than 20 million
tonnes of pollutants in their tracks and help recycle rare elements up to a purity of 99.999%.
We have been leaders in our field for more than 200 years, applying unrivalled scientific expertise to enable
cleaner air, improved health and the more efficient use of our planet’s natural resources. Through continued
investment in sound research and development, we are tackling the world’s big challenges into our third century
and beyond.
A member of the FTSE 100 with revenue in excess of £15.5 billion at year end 2021, we are well positioned for
strong growth in major markets. Today more than 15,000 JM professionals collaborate within our network of
customers and partners in over 30 locations worldwide to make a real difference to the world around us. We
support our customers' needs from 43 major manufacturing sites all around the globe, providing consistency and
quality wherever they are, from South Africa to North Macedonia, the USA or China. As we move into our third
century, we are continuing to invest in our footprint to ensure we are best positioned to serve our customers and
future demand.
JM is split into established sectors such as Clean Air and ENR, and high growth businesses in the green energy
space such as Hydrogen. As a company with science and innovation at the heart of what we do, JM never stands
still. Our business nurtures potential future growth areas to find new product innovation and success, focusing
on areas adjacent to our current interests that build on our core technology competences:
• Clean Air – Governments and consumers are increasingly concerned about air quality, with regulations and
legislation tightening. Our Clean Air sector helps meet these challenges, helping to effectively and efficiently
reduce emissions from vehicles and other sources. More than 90% of new passenger vehicles are now fitted
with autocatalysts, one third of which have been supplied by JM.
• Efficient Natural Resources – With the rise of both population figures and consumer expectations, thoughts
are turning to how we can make more of the resources we have available. Our Efficient Natural Resources
sector helps customers to achieve greater efficiency and optimal yields in the use of these natural resources.
Through recycling capabilities, we help the world use resources efficiently and protect the environment.
• Hydrogen Businesses: Fuel Cells and Green Hydrogen - With both the manufacturing and chemistry
expertise, we are driving materials and systems innovations to produce market leading hydrogen production
catalysts and processes, components for hydrogen fuel cells and new technologies for Low Carbon Hydrogen production.
• Value Businesses – Focusing on areas adjacent to our current interests that build on our core technology
competences
OUR STRATEGY
JM has a clear vision: for a world that's cleaner and healthier; today and for future generations. Our strategy is
designed to help us achieve this vision and is created from four parts: science, customers, operations and people.
We invest in our world class science and technology; use it to solve our customers' complex problems with a
focus on remaining or making JM a leader in high margin, tech-driven markets; operate as a safer, more
connected, agile and efficient global business; and deliver it through our great people, shaping the world around
us to make it a cleaner and healthier place. This needs everyone to play their part: to think more flexibly, join
the dots as a global team, combine expertise to make a real impact to our customers and our world.
We're already on our way; fast becoming a more connected, adaptable business, finding more efficient ways to
do things and introducing shared global systems, so we can focus on innovation and improvement and make
decisions more quickly. We have a responsibility to ensure that the products we make – and the way that we
make them – is as sustainable as possible, whether that’s keeping our people safe at work, adopting ethical
business practices or reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our facilities
OUR CULTURE AND VALUES
JM’s culture and values highlight what is important to us, what makes us distinctive and what it’s like to work
here. They provide the framework against which we engage with each other at work and with our customers and
stakeholders, and describe how we do things in JM when we are at our best. As we enter our third century of
growth, we need to continue to promote and live through our corporate values:
• Protecting people and the planet – We practice the highest standards of health and safety, promote
wellbeing for people both inside and outside of work, and seek to safeguard our planet.
• Acting with integrity – We do the right thing, for people and the world. We do what we say we’ll do, expect
the same of each other and speak up when there’s a problem. We place an importance on relationships
internally and externally, treating others with respect and care.
• Working together – We encourage collaboration inside JM and out, sharing and embracing diverse
viewpoints. We tackle problems together, put our ideas into practice and take pride in combining our
contributions to create something better for JM and our customers.
• Innovating and improving – We adapt and embrace new ideas to make us stronger and our world cleaner
and healthier. We are confident and resilient through change, growing and developing ourselves and JM, to
ensure we are a leader in our chosen markets.
• Owning what we do – We take accountability for our own work, and know we are also part of something
bigger. We take the initiative, seek clarity and demand high standards from ourselves and our colleagues.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) forms the core foundation of who we are in JM and our vision for a world that’s cleaner
and healthier, today and for future generations. D&I enables our innovation and agility because of the value we
place on diversity of all kinds. Our Leadership Team enable strong business performance because they empower
and engage their teams by role modelling inclusion in their everyday conversations. Our shareholders and
customers trust us because our rich diversity is a hallmark of a sustainable, well-run business.
Together for a cleaner, healthier world.
Our reputation for an environment where difference matters means as an employer we stand out from the crowd
and attract a broad talent pool. Integral to our culture are two fundamental beliefs that all differences matter
and that all people are valued. Our integrity is a direct result of ensuring that all voices, however quiet, are
heard. In JM everyone thrives and brings their full self to work.
It’s essential that our staff, today and in the future, feel safe, valued and supported in the workplace. There are
differences that make us unique, but one overarching similarity that connects us all: we are many people but we
are one JM. Diverse by nature, inclusive by culture: that's our aim.
To ensure we’re making progress, we have a Diversity and Inclusion taskforce working on a global scale. They
draw from best practice to support the development of global policies, training and data monitoring programmes,
and facilitate the formation of employee resource groups – networks of individuals who share certain experiences
or interests. Membership is open to all, with allyship in each group crucial in helping foster a culture of inclusion
across JM.
• Gender Equality Network (GEN) – GEN aim to make JM a better, more inclusive business through improved
gender balance. They plan to remove barriers to gender parity, so that women and men have equal
opportunity to fulfil their potential and reach their aspirations.
• Black Employee Network (BEN) – BEN is dedicated to the interests of employees who self identify their
ethnicity as black. They aim to increase the visibility, recruitment and selection of black employees for all
roles within JM, ensure equal access to development opportunities within the company are afforded to black
employees to help further their career, participate in social outreach programmes and work with the education
sector to provide placement opportunities to black science or engineering students, and provide a support
network for black employees throughout the organisation.
• DiversAbility – DiversAbility aim to make JM a great place to work with an environment and culture that
welcomes and supports individuals living with physical, mental or social health conditions to maximise the
use of their talents.
• Enhance – Enhance supports both new and existing employees in feeling included, empowered and inspired
to maximise their potential. They aim to create a more connected and inclusive workforce by running a
mixture of networking, personal and career development and social events.
• Family Network – The Family Network's mission is to support JM employees in balancing work and family
life. They support employees with a safe space to share and discuss challenges throughout the employees
career, without hindering their decision making.
• Pride in JM – Pride in JM is an employee resource group that aims to enhance the wellbeing and performance
of LGBT+ employees in Johnson Matthey by creating and maintaining a culture of inclusion through
empowerment, supporting policy development, providing resources and training. LGBT+ Networks like Pride
in JM exist to provide a support network for LGBT+ colleagues. They help make people feel as though they
are not alone and they too, like the network, have a place within our company. The LGBT+ community faces
issues such as elevated cases of mental health problems, higher rates of suicide, rejection from friends &
family and legislature in countries across the world that inhibit rights and criminalise LGBT+ lifestyles. Pride
in JM cannot alleviate all these issues but acknowledges the challenges being LGBT+ poses and actively seeks
to lend support and foster inclusivity within our business.
