Our Story
In 1989, Hissho Sushi CEO Philip Maung arrived in America with just $13 in his pocket and a dream of making a new life. He found his calling in the emerging supermarket sushi industry and spent years learning every facet of the sushi business. In 1998, Philip and his wife Kristina pooled their finances to form Hissho Sushi and founded the company in the family dining room. The company began providing fresh sushi daily to supermarkets and cafes.

Today, Hissho Sushi is a dynamic foodservice and distribution company managing and operating almost 900 sushi bars across the U.S. Our 46,000 square foot, state-of-the-art headquarters is located in beautiful Charlotte, NC.

Philip Maung was nominated as a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2006. In 2007, Entrepreneur Magazine named Hissho Sushi to its Hot 500 list of fastest growing businesses in America. In 2009, Maung received the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Southeast division, as well as a National Finalist. In 2010, Hissho Sushi was named one of the nation’s top entrepreneurial companies in the position of 3571 in Inc. 5000 annual ranking;and was in the Top 100 in the Food & Beverage Companies. As recently as April 2016, Hissho was recognized as a Charlotte Future 50 by SmartCEO.

As our company continues to expand, we remain more committed than ever to exceeding our customers’ expectations and providing the highest quality sushi available for consumers.
Our Culture
One of the things we’re most proud of at Hissho Sushi is our Culture. Just take one step inside our headquarters and you’ll see why. Our crazy cubicles range from the simplistic “a few photos here and there,” to complete themes like Philip’s Tiki Bar, Asian kites and lanterns, and even a wild jungle.

Work hard, play hard is one of our core values and we embrace it! When a long week is nearing the end, it’s not uncommon to hear Philip call for drinks at his Tiki Bar for Happy Hour! On nice days, you can find us having ice cream by our Hissho Lake, doing trash pick-up or just out for an afternoon power walk!

Laughter and smiles are also cornerstones of the Hissho Culture. You’ll find that we refer to ourselves as Hisshonians quite often – because we're a family. We welcome everyone with open arms and support individuals so that we can all grow as a team. If you're someone who takes the quality of your work seriously but can still laugh at yourself, this may be the place for you!
Our Core Values
Communicate Openly & Honestly

- We believe in transparency and are rewarded with the trust it fosters. We pride ourselves on honest communication delivered with thoughtfulness, consideration and sensitivity.

Empower Each Other to Achieve the Impossible

- With the tools, training and — most importantly — freedom to act independently, our team is primed to reach new heights. We’re sometimes asked and expected to do the impossible, and we always rise to the occasion.

Dare to Be Different

- We don’t settle for normal around here, and we definitely don’t follow the crowd. We’ve always been a little different and we believe it’s one of the cornerstones of our success.

Inspire & Be Inspired

- Make a difference in ways big and small every day. Your actions and attitude can have farther-reaching impact than you may ever know.

Respect Ourselves & Each Other

- We value people who are trustworthy, show integrity and have a sense of self-awareness. When you cultivate these traits, it shows you respect yourself and in turn, you gain the respect of others.

Deliver High-Speed, High-Touch Service

- We know that it’s not enough just to have the best products on the market. We must also provide impeccable service to our customers and partners.

Work Hard, Play Hard

- Hitting our goals truly brings us joy and we’re driven to get there. We may face tough challenges along the way, but we always have fun getting there — and we always celebrate at the end of the road.

Exude Compassion & Humility

- We know none of us can do it alone, so showing kindness, caring and willingness to help is a key to building our tight-knit team. With no egos in the way, we get a lot more done.
