One of the East Coast's largest civil and heavy industrial construction companies, Cianbro welcomes requests from clients to help a brother out. The employee-owned Cianbro specializes in modular construction, marine and piling work, transportation projects, and pulp and paper construction projects. Its other areas of expertise include chemical plants, hydroelectric dams, biotech, and warehouses. Its owned equipment fleet comprises some 3,500 numbered pieces. Cianbro specializes in providing construction services from the conceptual stage through implementation and works start-up, commissioned, and turn-key operations. Its client list includes L.L. Bean, International Paper, and the US government.

Strategy

To bring new industrial projects to Maine and New England, Cianbro has undertaken large modular construction projects, such as the Motiva Enterprises refinery expansion in Port Arthur, Texas. Modules are built at Cianbro's manufacturing facilities in Maine and then shipped to the construction site via tug boat and barge. The plant, which makes the modules, was converted from a bankrupt paper mill.

Company Background

Four Cianchette brothers -- Carl, Ken, Bud, and Chuck -- pooled their savings and used Chuck's 1934 pickup truck to found Cianbro in 1949.
