About Mitsubishi Power Systems
Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas (MPSA) has energy to burn. The US subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries manufactures and distributes industrial power generation products, such as gas, steam, hydroelectric, wind, and geothermal turbines, as well as boilers and selective catalytic reduction systems (SCRs), throughout the Americas. The company is developing solar panels and lithium-ion batteries for the renewable energy market. MPSA has two plants, in Florida and Georgia, that manufacture gas turbines and parts for gas and steam turbines. MPSA is building a $100 million plant in Arkansas to manufacture wind turbines. The company also offers project management for the design and construction of power plants.

To meet the demand for renewable energy products in the US, MPSA has focused its development towards more energy-efficient systems. The Arkansas plant, announced in 2010, will produce about 250 2.4 MW wind turbines a year. Mitsubishi in Japan has already sold more than 3,500 wind turbines to the US, and the company saw a US-based plant, scheduled to open in 2012, as a natural fit. MPSA also has joint ownership in a Mexican company, Vientek, that makes blades for wind turbines. Vientek was established in 2002 with blade manufacturer TPI Composites.

Mitsubishi Power Systems in Japan is building a plant to produce lithium-ion batteries for commercial and industrial use, specifically hybrid forklifts, electric buses, and micro grid systems. Once the plant is complete in 2011, the batteries will be sold in the US through MPSA. Solar panels are already manufactured in Japan and sold in the US as special orders.

MPSA saw sales recover in 2009 with two major orders in Canada. TransCanada bought two gas turbines and generators for a new power plant in Ontario, and ENMAX Green Power, a subsidiary of ENMAX, bought two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, and one steam turbine, along with generators from Mitsubishi Electric. Natural gas power plants are booming in North America, where the resource is inexpensive. Mitsubishi Power Systems in Japan is developing a combination gas turbine that uses fuel cell technology.

MPSA also teamed up with Emerson Process Management, a segment of Emerson Electric, for a turbine retrofitting project in Colombia.
