About Northeast Kingdom Human Services
Northeast Kingdom Human Service (NKHS) was founded in 1960 as a 501(c)(3) private not-for-profit organization under the name Northeast Family Counseling Service, Inc. for the purpose of promoting a comprehensive community mental health program in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. The corporation name evolved to Northeast Kingdom Human Services, Inc. to better express our mission to enrich communities and enhance the ability of individuals and families to improve their lives.
NKHS is a Designated Agency contracting with the State of Vermont serving the mandated service areas of adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, children and youth with serious emotional disabilities, and adults with chronic mental illness. Members of our Board of Directors are dedicated volunteers representing 51% consumer and family ties to NKHS.
We deliver our services through a wide variety of targeted programs for individuals of all ages. Our service area includes Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties. Over 400 employees provide case management, community and home supports, residential care, psychiatry, medication management, therapy, vocational supports, school based counseling, emergency care, and respite services for 3700 clients annually who may be challenged by conditions affecting mind, body, and spirit. We offer outreach and consultation to communities, schools, and businesses in our service area. Crisis intervention services are available twenty-four hours a day every day of the year.
The majority of our revenue comes from fee-for-service, Medicare, and Medicaid. We offer financial assistance for eligible individuals and/or fee adjustments made according to the person’s ability to pay. NKHS faces on-going challenges with funding limits and staffing resources, but remains fiscally and programmatically responsible to the needs of the communities we serve.
