About Alvord Taylor
It started in 1969 with a conversation – about how to best help young adults with developmental disabilities live in the community. At the time, many individuals were institutionalized, and few opportunities existed for transitioning from special education programs into adult life.
Alvord-Taylor, Inc., assists people with disabilities to live quality lives in their communities. We began as an alternative to the institution model provided by the state institution Fairview Training Center, which closed in 2000. In 1969, two families united to develop a group home for individuals with disabilities. With help from the ARC of Lane County and financial backing from John Alvord, a group home was opened in 1970. In 1974, Alvord-Taylor was incorporated as a non-profit organization. 44 years later, Alvord-Taylor, Inc., continues to provide 24-hour direct support services both to individuals in group homes, as well as supported living services to those who live in their own homes.
Over the years, Alvord-Taylor has grown and evolved – both our services and the number of people we support. At the same time, our group homes have gone from housing as many as ten people to an average of three residents.
We serve over 60 people with disabilities in the Eugene-Springfield area. Our main areas of focus are facilitating independence and personal opportunity. We believe in genuine community involvement for the people we support and increasing community awareness of the abilities of the people we support.
The majority of people we support are gainfully employed, working with various programs and vocational providers throughout the community to maintain jobs.
Our staff of over 200 employees works cooperatively with the people we support and their families to identify goals and implement the support necessary for increased independence and quality of life.
Alvord-Taylor depends on donor support as well as government contracts to support our programs. We rely on community support to ensure access to activities and events are available to all people we support, not just those who can afford it. We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit and all donations, both money and in-kind, are tax deductible.

We empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to have quality experiences at home, at work and in the community. We follow five core values:
Respect – People who enter our lives are treated with dignity and value
Community – We include and contribute to those around us
Partnership – We are not solutions to the people we support, but partners in what they want to do
Diversity – Difference is celebrated
Empowerment – We encourage growth and success by providing options and tools
At Alvord-Taylor, we work with people to help them feel comfortable and at-ease in their homes – whether it’s in one of the homes we manage or in an apartment. Those we serve need assistance, and we provide that through 24-hour support or supported living. We always take care to respect and accommodate each person’s lifestyle.
24-HOUR SUPPORT
Some people need round-the-clock support to meet their personal goals. Most live in a home with two roommates. We currently serve more than 40 people who live in residential neighborhoods in the Eugene/Springfield area. Employees at each home provide individualized training and support.
SUPPORTED LIVING
Some people live independently in apartments, yet need assistance and training with a variety of daily living tasks from managing personal health to accessing community resources and activities. They can always access our 24-hour emergency support network when something unexpected happens.

EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATION
Everyone needs money to survive, but more than that, they need purpose. Individuals at Alvord-Taylor are no different. There are three options for those we serve: Seek competitive employment within the community, apply for one of Alvord Taylor’s positions for supported individuals to increase work skills, or volunteer within the community to identify and learn additional work skills. Our goal is help the people we support feel valued and encouraged to engage in work activities that they enjoy. Performing meaningful work in the community contributes to a quality life. The key is finding a good fit between a person’s interests and available opportunities.
We take a person-centered approach and each person makes their own choices. Our staff members are available to provide information, guide and facilitate those choices. Most of the people who participate in our vocational program don’t work full-time, but they do work that is meaningful to them.
Our goal is to have individuals employed in community businesses, while our staff provide any on the job support the person needs to be successful. This includes anything from supporting someone during a large portion of their shift to simply checking in and ensuring both the employer and employee are doing well.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Both our home and work programs help those we support interact more in the community, because that is part of enjoying life. Whether people are going to arts performances, community events or just shopping, being in the community provides them with a more well-rounded life.
We help people pursue their interests. One of the people we support throws pottery by using adaptive equipment, which he personally designed to accomplish this task. Others paint, create jewelry, and make art from shredded paper. Some like crocheting, karaoke, games, and hanging out with friends. Many of the people we support are becoming entrepreneurs by selling what they create.
Travel is also important, and we’ve helped people go to places like London, Disneyland, Hawaii, and the Oregon coast. Some want to visit parents or relatives in other states. We listen and help people plan travel that will be meaningful to them. Not everyone can afford a special trip, so we invite donations to make a dream vacation possible.
