Delaware State University

One of the top historically black colleges and universities in the US, Delaware State University (DSU) offers more than 50 bachelor's degree programs, 25 graduate degree programs, and five doctoral degree programs through more than 20 academic departments and five colleges. In addition to its main 400-acre campus in Dover, the university has satellite locations in Georgetown and Wilmington. The school began as a land-grant educational institution, founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students. It became known as Delaware State College in 1947 and gained university status in 1993. The university has a student-teacher ratio of 14:1 and enrolls more than 3,800 students each year.

While proud of its black heritage, DSU has grown to be a diverse campus with a fourth of its student body represented by Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, and other cultures. It has also grown from its agricultural roots to expand its offerings from the development of its nationally acclaimed business school to its advanced, state-of-the-art research and technology labs.

DSU's most popular majors (as measured by degrees awarded) are business administration, psychology, mass communications, criminal justice and sociology, sport management, social work, biological sciences, nursing, and education programs. The university also operates the mid-Atlantic region's only university-based, full-service flight school.

Outside the classroom, the school sponsors athletic teams and activities, about 20 student organizations, and student support services. The main campus is within several hours driving distance to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC, and New York City is within a three-hour drive.
