History Of Filosa In Danbury, CT
Born to Lebanese immigrants in Maryland, Barbara Filosa followed her older sister’s footsteps into nursing and then turned her passion for geriatrics into a family business. Mrs. Filosa founded Filosa Convalescent Home (now Filosa for Nursing and Rehabilitation) in 1947.
The business had its beginnings in Danbury, where she’d moved with her ailing husband. Filosa found work at Danbury Hospital. However, she only stayed there for two years, as she decided to stay home to raise her daughter and take in an elderly neighbor who needed care.
From that point on, Barbara Filosa opened her home to the elderly. She was happy to work from home, as it also allowed her to care for her daughter and husband, who was ill for 13 years before his death in 1961.
Her home quickly filled with the elderly in need of care; at one point — before her home had two expansions built on — she housed and cared for 14 patients. Now Filosa’s small nursing home has turned into two facilities in Danbury — Filosa for Nursing and Rehabilitation and Hancock Hall started in 1983 by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Frank Malone.
Both nursing facilities continue to be owned and operated by the Filosa-Malone family, with a 3rd generation coming on board in the early 2000s. Currently, Jennifer Malone-Seixas is the Administrator at Hancock Hall and her brother, Michael Malone, is the Administrator at Filosa.
The family takes pride in continuing to provide the highest quality service and care to community members in need.
