About THARCO
French for "wooded" (boisée), Boise pushes a certain paper savoir-faire. The US-based manufacturer produces paper and packaging, including corrugated containers, containerboard, label and release paper, flexible packaging paper, multipurpose office paper and newsprint, and pulp. It operates a handful of mills and corrugated-products plants, and two distribution centers. Customers include office supply retailers, such as OfficeMax, commercial printers, and paper converters (forms and envelopes). Containers are sold to agricultural producers, and food and beverage processors. The company was formed in 2008 from the paper and packaging assets of Boise Cascade, which sold its remaining interest in Boise in 2010.
Geographic Reach
The company has a geographic presence in Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands, and the US.
Financial Analysis
Boise saw healthy growth from 2010 to 2011, with its total sales increasing by 15% and net income jumping by 20%. Packaging sales increased by 41%, and the company attributed the growth to previous acquisitions as well as higher net selling prices for its products. Boise in 2011 also suffered fewer losses associated with the extinguishment of its debt compared to 2010.
Strategy
Boise has been busy buying other packaging companies in order to boost its own manufacturing capacity and widen its geographic scope. In early 2011 the company snapped up California-based corrugated package manufacturer THARCO Packaging for $200 million. The deal added 11 facilities in eight states and tapped demand from the Pacific Northwest to California, Colorado, Arizona, and Georgia. The additional liner-board production also served Boise's own manufacturing needs.
In late 2011 Boise obtained the Hexacomb protective packaging unit of Pregis Corporation for $125 million in cash, expanding its operations outside the US for the first time. Hexacomb manufactured kraft paper-based honeycomb containerboard products at 12 facilities in six countries. The important deal expanded Boise's markets to Canada, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Spain.
