About Trelleborg Sealing Solutions
If it leaks, overheats, or vibrates, Trelleborg makes rubber parts that can fix it. The company is a global manufacturer of polymer-based industrial rubber products, including hoses, seals, and anti-vibration components, that it sells to the aerospace, automotive, construction, industrial, oil and gas, and transportation markets. To a lesser degree it also makes tires for the agricultural and industrial markets. Trelleborg operates through four segments: Engineered Systems, Automotive, Sealing Solutions, and Wheel Systems. Its core markets are western Europe and North America, but it is increasing sales especially in the Asia/Pacific region. Scandinavian industrialist Henry Dunker founded the company in 1905.

Among the products in Trelleborg's largest segment, Engineered Systems, are fender systems for harbors, pipe seals, tunnel seals, dredging systems, and acoustic and vibration damping systems for bridges and railways. It also makes precision components and polymer materials, including hoses, elastomer materials, and polymer-coated fabrics. Other specialty products include molded components for a variety of industries and printing blankets for the printing industry.

Trelleborg's Automotive segment is a global leader in developing and producing components and systems used for noise and vibration damping in passenger car and light and heavy trucks. The company's Sealing Solutions segment is a supplier of precision seals for the automotive, aerospace, and industrial markets. Products include safety-critical aircraft seals that are used in all major commercial and military aircraft; safety-critical seals used in light vehicles, trains, agricultural equipment, and offshore oil and gas equipment; and O-rings, rotary seals, and hydraulic seals used in industrial applications. Its fourth segment, Wheel Systems, focuses on making tires and complete wheel systems for agricultural and forest machinery, forklift trucks, and other material handling vehicles.

The company has operations in more than 40 countries worldwide, and it makes a majority of its sales in western Europe and North America, with the top three markets being the US, Germany, and France. However, the areas that are showing the highest growth rates for Trelleborg are the Asia/Pacific region and South and Central America, where it has been acquiring businesses to support its growth.

In Japan the company acquired its marine systems distributor, TMS Japan, to strengthen its presence in that country. Trelleborg expanded its presence in the Chinese market by acquiring a tire manufacturing facility in 2011, which makes it the first manufacturer of agricultural tires from the West to have its own production in China.

In Latin America the company acquired a manufacturer of oil hoses (used in oil and gas surface and deep-sea production) in Brazil from a subsidiary of Veyance Technologies. The business will be integrated into Trelleborg's Engineered Systems unit. The SEK40 million ($6.3 million) acquisition will deepen its footprint in the Brazilian offshore oil and gas market and follows the wave of customers moving their production to Latin America. Trelleborg also divested its Brazilian brake hose operations that serve light vehicle markets in 2011. France's Flexitec paid roughly SEK65 million ($9.7 million) for the unit. (Trelleborg also runs an anti-vibration for light vehicles unit in Brazil, which demonstrates a more sustainable outlook).

In Europe and North America it agreed to purchase a 60% stake (with an option to acquire the remainder) in France-based Bloch, a provider of specialized industrial hose couplings for use in the chemical processing and food sectors. It also agreed to acquire certain assets of Canada's Silcotech, a manufacturer of precision seals for silicone usage in the medical, pharmaceutical, and electronic industries. Silcotech will strengthen Trelleborg's Sealing Solutions business. Meanwhile, its Wheel Systems business acquired UK-based Watts Tyre Group for SEK230 million (about $33 million) in 2011. The acquisition gives Trelleborg an increased aftermarket presence.
