About Active Network
Thinking about enrolling for a marathon or adventure race? The first step is to get fit, but the second one might involve The Active Network. The company makes software used to build websites that help participants find and register for sports events online. Using Active.com, organizers can administer online registration, promotion, and fundraising efforts. Other applications target parks, recreation agencies, and universities. The company's ActiveSports unit facilitates communication within teams, leagues, and camps. Virtually all sales come from North America. The Active Network went public in 2011.

The company intends to use proceeds from the sale of stock to repay debt and to fund potential acquisitions. The Active Network uses periodic acquisitions to build its product portfolio and expand into new markets. It moved into the faith market in 2011 with the purchase of Fellowship Technologies, a developer of software primarily for churches and other religious community organizations in North America. That year the company also bought RTP, LLC, a provider of operations management software, mainly to the ski resort industry but also to parks, attractions, and other resorts. The purchase will help The Active Network even out its seasonal revenue cycles.

It acquired Pleasanton, California-based online software and services provider Clubspace in 2010. The deal raised the company's profile in the youth and amateur sports markets. Clubspace's clients included organizations such as the American Youth Soccer Organization, the Amateur Softball Association, and American Youth Football, which used its online website creation, registration, and scheduling tools to manage their events. The Active Network integrated Clubspace's technology with its ActiveSports division. The company also bought a similar business, Channel:1 Corporation, that year to improve the functionality of its online tools, particularly in the areas of onsite event management and marketing.

The company acquired campground reservation services provider ReserveAmerica Holdings the previous year from IAC/InterActiveCorp (IAC). The stock swap deal gave IAC a 9% stake in The Active Network. In 2008 Active Network bought HY-TEK Sports Software, a provider of applications and services for use by track and field and swimming teams and organizations. It also purchased Automated License Systems, a maker of automated hunting and fishing license systems, that year.

The Active Network is extending its international reach by opening overseas sales offices. The company moved into the Asia/Pacific region in 2009 when it established operations in New Zealand and Singapore, and it expanded into the European market the previous year when it opened an office in London. It also has offices in Australia, Canada, China, and across the US.

ESPN and affiliates own about 16% of the the company. Director Stephen L. Green, through investment firm Canaan Partners, owns another 12%.
