HSC is constantly evolving our efficient manufacturing process, allowing us to produce polysilicon with an ultra-low-carbon footprint. High-purity polysilicon from Hemlock Semiconductor is used to make semiconductors that power cell phones, computers and the technology of the future, where the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence meet in new products such as autonomous vehicles. Hemlock Semiconductor also is moving the world toward a greener future by supplying polysilicon, a fundamental building block for solar panels, to the solar power industry. We’re constantly improving our high-tech manufacturing process to offer high-purity polysilicon with an ultra-low-carbon footprint, enabling the production of solar panels with up to 50% less "embodied carbon" than typical solar.

About Polysilicon

Polysilicon is a hyper-pure form of the element silicon found in the Earth’s crust. In fact, at a 99.999999999% purity level, our employees perform a key purification step in the manufacturing of the purest substance on the planet. That’s like allowing no more than one grain of sand inside 16 Olympic sized swimming pools!

To make polysilicon, we pump trichlorosilane gas into a reactor fitted with thin silicon starter rods. When we activate our reactors with electricity, the silicon part of the gas molecules sticks to the rods, creating thicker rods of polysilicon.

Afterwards, we break the rods into smaller chunks that are sent to manufacturers around the world and serve as the building blocks to computer chips and solar panels.

Community and Regional Empowerment (CARE) Fund

As part of our goal to improve the quality of life throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region, Hemlock Semiconductor Operation’s Community and Regional Empowerment (CARE) Fund provides up to $30,000 for local projects and programs. Schools, units of government and local groups with 501(c)(3) designation can apply for grants through the Bay Area Community Foundation, Midland Area Community Foundation or Saginaw Community Foundation. Fire Academy Sponsorships

At HSC, we’re committed to safety for our employees, their families and our neighbors. HSC has 27 volunteer firefighters and first responders on staff, and we support responders in neighboring communities by donating equipment and providing hands on training at our facilities.

To expand safety training in our community, HSC offers Fire Academy Sponsorships to local fire departments to cover the cost of sending enrollees to local fire academies to receive their Michigan Firefighter I&II training. The grants are available to fire departments in Saginaw, Bay, Midland and Gratiot counties. HSC's Contribution Committee reviews applications and awards the grants.
