Extendicare COVID-19 Response
March 15, 2021

To Our Extendicare Community,

There has been good news to start the year with vaccines being administered to vulnerable populations across Canada. Extendicare continues to work with our public health partners across the country to administer first and second doses to help protect our communities.

Our staff have fought day-in and day-out against this devastating virus for a year. While it has been difficult, the vaccine gives hope that we are nearing a return to better times.

Despite the tragic losses suffered and the hardships endured, I am feeling more optimistic about recovery now than I have for some time – in part because our vaccination program is moving quickly, and in larger part because team members across our communities continue to selflessly put the needs of our residents and clients first...

IMPROVING CARE. EVERY DAY.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a tragedy on a global scale. It has exposed weaknesses in our health-care system and, in particular, the challenges that have burdened the long-term care sector for decades.

Fortunately, we are now seeing policy changes and financial support from government that will help enable a fundamental renewal of long-term care. At Extendicare, we are embracing this opportunity to learn from the crisis to build a better future for seniors’ care.

We have embarked on a new, multi-year national plan to improve care, every day, across every home we operate. We are focused on five key areas for improvement to:

1. Improve the quality of life for those we care for by increasing the number of caregivers, working more closely with other care providers such as hospitals and physicians, and adding specialized clinical capabilities;
2. Support the success of our team members and foster their development, learning and career advancement;
3. Engage residents and families as partners in care and organizational change;
4. Replace or upgrade older long-term care homes; and
5. Increase transparency and accountability through measurement and reporting on progress against goals for improved service and quality of care.

We have already started this journey with a number of actions underway today.

Richard's Journey
My name is Richard , I am a proud PSW who has been working for Extendicare for over 35 years. I am always excited and energized to come to work because engaging with my residents is very rewarding. I take my responsibilities seriously so my residents will benefit from great care. If you join our team you too will always feel welcomed. My residents energize me every day with their personalities and great energy. I am always engaging them in whatever way I can and make them smile. They are like family.

The whole team at Extendicare has been navigating this unprecedented epidemic for the last 8 months and doing a great job providing all the necessary material to protect the frontline staff.
There are lots of other institutions in the city but I think my 35 years of service here tells you that I am happy to work for Extendicare. There is always room for improvement, there is always something new to learn in this field as a PSW. You are never to old to learn new things that benefit you and your residents.

I am also blessed with a great team of diverse cultures at Extendicare and am fortunate to have a team of hard working and dedicated staff that put in 100% every day. My success has derived from working for a place I call my second home.
